Are you someone who struggles to get to sleep at night? Maybe it’s the late-night flicking through social media or watching another episode of your new favourite series. Or perhaps you simply can’t switch your brain off at the end of the day. Well, this one is for the night owls and the restless sleepers. We’ve taken the time to list a few handy tips and tricks to help send you off to the land of nod in no time.
Tech Time-Out
Step away from the screens! Your smartphone, tablet, laptop, and TV all emit a sleep-disrupting blue light that messes with your body's sleep cycle. So, at least an hour before bedtime, it’s important to give yourself a tech break. Instead, why not pick up a good book or listen to some calming music? Or, if you want to try something different, try listening to some sleep meditation therapy.
Exercise
Regular exercise has plenty of benefits, including better relaxation and sleep. If you don’t have the time or energy for a strenuous workout during the day, that’s fine. A brisk walk can be enough. And remember to avoid intense workouts too close to bedtime. Otherwise, you might be too energised to sleep.
Eat Well
Much like regular exercise, a balanced and healthy diet is essential for a healthy sleeping pattern. While it’s difficult to pinpoint one particular diet that will contribute to better sleep, what is clear is that a balanced and nutrient-rich diet is key. It’s also important to avoid large meals before bedtime, and the same goes for alcohol and nicotine.
Don’t Force It
Sometimes you just have one of those nights. You’re laying in bed with your eyes closed but your brain just won’t switch off. And that’s OK. Well, it’s inconvenient, but you can’t always swim against the current. On nights like these, it’s better to take a proactive approach. Get up, find somewhere nice to sit and grab a book or listen to some relaxing music. Just remember not to look at any screens or eat lots of food. Then, once your eyelids start to get a little heavier, go back to bed.
Create A Cosy Sleep Environment
Creating the perfect sleeping environment is very much a personal affair. It all depends on your tastes and what works for you. Having your room at a good temperature is the first thing, then there’s silence. If you’re near a hopping bar or restaurant – or the neighbours are a bit loud – maybe it’s time to invest in some earplugs.
A great way to ensure a good night’s sleep is with blackout window coverings. With their movable slats, plantation shutters are an excellent way to shut out the glare from streetlights and early sunrises. The benefits don’t stop there either. Shutters give you more privacy, help with noise reduction, and they’re great insulators, ensuring you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
