When it comes to decorating your windows, style should always be a top priority, but so too should practicality. To get the most out of your fixtures, it’s important to give them the love and care they deserve, and this includes cleaning them as required. However, if you’re like us, you’d rather spend less time cleaning and more time admiring, which is why you should always opt for the most easy-to-clean window coverings. But before we get to those, we’ll touch upon your other options first.
How To Clean Blinds
Blinds have different cleaning requirements depending on what material they’re made of and how much dirt they’ve accrued. The most common methods of cleaning are dusting, wiping with a damp cloth, or hoovering. While this may not seem like a lot of work, blinds are notorious dust collectors. This means they require very regular cleaning, otherwise dirt will quickly build up.
If your blinds have seen better days and need a more intensive clean, you will have to take your blinds down completely. Then, carefully place them into the bathtub with warm water and a few drops of dishwashing soap. Soak the blinds for no longer than 20-minutes and wash any excess dirt with a cloth. Drain the bath, rinse the blinds, and then dry them with a clean and dry microfiber cloth. Please note that this method is suitable for metal, vinyl, and faux wood blinds. Do not attempt this with fabric or other types of blinds.
How To Clean Curtains
Curtains help to keep out dust. This is great, but as a result they collect vast quantities of it. Therefore, if you want to keep your curtains in good condition, they require regular hoovering with an upholstery tool. This can be as often as every week.
There are several steps to go through when cleaning curtains:
-
Remove all hooks and curtain weights and loosen the heading tape.
-
Soak curtains in cold water and then wash according to the material’s requirements. If you are hand-washing the curtains, be sure the detergent has fully dissolved.
-
Give the curtains a good rinse and wring out as much water as possible.
-
Iron the curtains while they are still damp, working lengthways and stretching the fabric gently.
-
Remember to clean the tracks, window rails and sills before putting your curtains back up.
-
Hang the curtains while they are still a bit damp.
If that sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. Wouldn’t you much prefer a much lower maintenance window dressing? Well, as it just so happens, shutters are exactly that.

Shutters: The Easy-To-Clean Window Coverings
If you’ve just bought your own shutters, or are thinking about buying some, then you’ll be delighted to hear they’re super easy to clean. By giving your shutter blinds just a little TLC, they’ll last for years to come. Plus, because of their construction and composition, shutters don’t need cleaning very often.
-
Run a dry cloth or duster along the slats
Tilt your slats open and give them a quick wipe. Or, if you’re short on time, close the slats and go over the whole panel. Remember to clean the frames, too.
-
Don’t neglect the corners
Shutters have moving parts, so some dust can build up in the corners and other little nooks. Every so often be sure to get these spots with a soft toothbrush. This takes literally a few seconds.
-
See to any stains
Rub any stubborn stains with a slightly damp cloth, being careful not to wet the shutters too much. It’s also important not to rub too hard or use any cleaning products which might affect the paint. Once you’ve removed the stain, simply give the area a rub with a dry cloth.
That wasn’t so hard, was it?
