Have you recently found yourself admiring a set of shutters and thinking: “I’d really love some of my own”, only to stop yourself for fear of overspending? Well, you’re not alone. We’ve spoken to many a homeowner in our time who are worried that they simply don’t have the funds to bring in the professionals. But what if we told you that you can fit your own shutters, and at a fraction of the cost of measure and install services? Don’t worry if you’re not a dab hand at DIY either, because we’re here to make things as simple as possible.
Choose Your Style
Fitting your own shutters might sound like a large undertaking, but it’s surprisingly straightforward. The first thing to do is decide on which style you’re after. At DIY Shutters, we have three options: full height, café style, and tier on tier. Each of these has their own distinct features, so it’s best to think about what you want to get out of the shutters. If you want the whole window covered, full height is the way to go, while café style is fitted to the bottom half only. For a compromise, tier on tier shutters cover the whole window but are divided into a top and bottom section, giving you more flexibility.
Our Shutter Materials
Next up, choose which material you want your shutters made from. You’ll have two options: hardwood and faux wood. But how to choose? Well, that’s what we’re here for.
Hardwood
This one’s a classic for a reason. Wooden shutters are lightweight, durable, and are our most affordable option. They’re also excellent insulators, helping to keep your room cool in summer and warm in winter.
Faux wood
Offering the same look and feel as hardwood, faux wood shutters are 100% waterproof, making them ideal for bathrooms. Plus, they’re made right here in the UK, giving them a much shorter lead time.
How To Fit Your Own Shutters
You’d be forgiven for thinking that this is the hard part, but it’s actually quite simple. Our easy-to-follow measuring guides will take you through everything step by step. Once you’ve measured up, it’s just a matter of entering the window measurements and a few design features (colour, hinge type, etc.) before placing your order. Then, once your shutters arrive be sure to go through our step-by-step installation guides. For the entire measure and install process, all you need is a pencil, spirit level, measuring tape, small hammer or mallet, Phillips screwdriver, and some decorators caulk. And that’s it! In just an hour or two, you’ll be admiring your brand new plantation shutters. Simple.
