Do you have some old, shabby shutters that are a bit worse for wear? Maybe they just aren’t doing the trick for your windows any longer, but you can’t bring yourself to get rid of your beloved louvered friends. Or perhaps you have moved into a new property and their existing window dressings are a bit more than just a fixer upper. Well, the good news is, you don’t have to. There are lots of ways to repurpose and recycle old shutters! And, lucky for you, we’ve decided to list our five favourites.
A Beautiful Bookcase
If you’re somebody who has more books than they know what to do with, then your set of old shutters might just provide the perfect solution. Not only will they make a beautiful bookcase, but it’ll be an incredibly sturdy one too. To get started, simply take at least four panels (or more for a larger case) to form the outer casing. Then, it’s just a matter of attaching the top and bottom and adding the shelves.

A Gorgeous Garden Fence
If you are planning on doing some gardening work, you will know that budgets can quickly spiral. That’s why it’s prudent to cut costs wherever possible. If you want to upcycle shutters, but your interior is fully formed, then it’s probably time to move it outside. A set of full height panels make a gorgeous garden fence, and all it takes is a few posts in the ground to attach them to. And what’s more, you can paint or stain your shutters any way you see fit!
A Stunning Seating Bench
Whether you’re going for a shabby chic look, or just need some additional garden furniture, this is a great one for both inside and outside the home. Simply attached some old table legs – or make your own – to the underside of a shutter panel and there you have it. You can also add an additional panel to serve as back support.

A Handsome Headboard
This is one of our absolute favourite ways to recycle old shutters. And the beauty of it is, it takes no time at all. All you have to do is lay a row of your old shutter panels to approximately match the width of your bed. You can either bracket them together or screw them to a wood panel. After this point, they can be easily secured onto the wall for your bed to be placed in front of them.
A Divine Room Divider
This is perhaps the easiest way to upcycle shutters. You will need at least three full height panels to serve as your room divider. Then, attached the panels with a screwdriver and some hinges. If your shutters are already hinged together, then all you’ll need to do is remove them from their frame, and hey presto!
