This page is for anyone who is choosing between plantation or solid shutters and needs some help understanding the differences between them. (And why plantation shutters are the right choice!)

What Are Plantation Shutters?

If you close your eyes and imagine shutters, you’re probably seeing some variation of plantation shutters. Plantation shutters have slats, similar to horizontal blinds, except the slats are much stronger and more durable, and are attached to a frame that is mounted onto the window, which allows the shutters to open and close like doors. Beyond opening and closing the entire panel, you can also tilt the slats to allow varying degrees of light to enter your home.

The Benefits of Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters give you the utmost control over the amount of light that enters your room, the airflow from outside when you have your window open, and other features like choosing the exact size of the slats. If you want versatility for any room in your home, then plantation shutters are an exceptional choice.

What Are Solid Shutters?

Solid shutters are similar to plantation shutters in many ways, except they have solid panels instead of slats. There is a frame that holds the panels, and individual panels that will vary in size. Instead of slats that open and close, it’s just a solid piece of wood. You can still open the individual panels like a door to let in light or block it out, but you’ll have a bit less control than you would with plantation shutters.

The Benefits of Solid Shutters

The key benefits of solid shutters are that they can offer a near black out effect, and can also do a better job of blocking out sound than many other types of window coverings. They can also provide you with more privacy than plantation shutters. Having said that, simply closing your plantation shutters is also an effective way to accomplish these goals, while you still keep the added benefit of complete light control.
